Sam Mbure's poems featured in this collection include: "Rain,"
"Retire," and the "Might Eagle" which appears below.
'The storm brought almost everything down big trees big
twigs big leaves The storm raised up almost everything
dust litter napkins. The storm caught almost everything except
the might eagle who soared when he chose hovered when he wished
dropped when he felt like gliding freely among the clouds
the eagle longed for more stormy days."

On April 7-9, 1994 over 200
scholars from Africa, Asia, Europe, Canada and the United states gathered at
the Penn State Berks Campus in Reading, Pennslyvania, to celebrate the work of
Ngugi wa Thiongo. The presentation of 150 papers, poetry readings by Sonia
Sanchez, Amiri Baraka, Kamau Braithwaite and a variety of distinguished poets
in English and African languages, and a reading by Ngugi himself, made this the
largest conference ever held to discuss an African writer. In addition to
focusing on Ngugi, the conference included the discussion of other relevant
African, Caribbean, Commonwealth, postcolonial and African American writers,
issues of writing in European and/or African and other indeginous languages,
political, social, cultural, historical, philosophical, pedagogical, economic
and religous context and questions of gender, orature, translations,
film, poetics and aesthetics. Ngugi wa Thiongo Texts and Contexts is
edited by Professor Charles Cantalupo and published by Africa World Press, Inc.
New Jersey, USA.
