Love at Fast Sight
accept he said
the fact that
she and I
had never seen
or having seen
had never thought
or having thought
had never spoken
or having spoken
had never done

but that morning
among the mad crowd
along kimathi street
our eyes saw...

that lunch at six-eighty
that evening at the 20th century

An introduction to East African Poetry is a selection of poems written in and about East africa. The poems were choosen on the basis of their worth, and are supported by commentaries intended to aid in understanding and appreciation, and to lead to enjoyment.

The poems are grouped into nine sections by theme such as 'Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow' or 'Politics, Polemics and Poetry'. Each is presented against a background which should help the reader to discover just what the poet is getting at, without imposing an interpretation on the poem.

Preserving the Landscape of Imagination: Children's Litearature
in Africa edited by Raoul Granqvist and Jurgen Martini is a contribution to the promotion of the rights of the child as they have been declared and discussed at so many fora and seminars in recent years. It is difficult to assess the value of such declarations. Nomally they are seen as leading nowhere or even as being counterproductive on account of their naive assumptions. But a more optimistic view is that they cummulatively help to promote the notion that strengthening children's culture should be part of any overall national, educational and political campaign designed to enhance democracy and progressive nation-building. Or, to put it in contrasting terms, any national, cultural programme that ignores children's culture is reductive, uninformed and redundant.
