THE GOAT AND THE COCK  

A farmer had kept a goat and a coc
On an acre green and beautiful
He had fed them well on maize and vines
And fat could be seen in their wool and feathers.

The farmer had friends he so much liked
On a ridge green and beautiful
They sent a message to the farmer to say
They’d visit him on Christmas day.

The farmer at first could not fancy
What he would offer his friends
The cock could not be enough for them
He decided to slaughter the goat.

The news leaked to the cock
He laughed two days and a half
And on the third day he said to his friend
‘Do you know – you shall die tomorrow!’

The goat ate nothing that day
Only said a little prayer
As the farmer whetted his knives
And waited for his friends to arrive.

The farmer at last received his friends
And a goat was too big for them.

The farmer decided to slaughter the cock
And save the goat for a bigger feast
He cut his neck and plucked his feathers
On an acre green and beautiful.
