Read and Recite My Poems

CHRISTMAS THEN

As a child, Christmas for me began in August
I picked coffee for four moths
Saved every shilling I could
Performed every duty with a smile
Patched my clothes
And got really geared for Christmas

‘Christmas will soon be with us’
Mum would remind me in September
‘If you eat sweets before Christmas
They will be tasteless on Christmas day
If you fill up your tummy before Christmas
You will have nothing to eat on Christmas day
Christmas will be an ordinary day to you.

As a child, Christmas came four hard times a year
Now Christmas comes once a year
And it just flashes past.
